China Labor Day, also known as May Day, is a public holiday celebrated on May 1st every year. Its origin can be traced back to the late 19th century when labor movements in the United States and Europe were advocating for workers' rights and better working conditions. In 1886, a labor rally in Chicago turned violent, resulting in the death of several workers. In memory of the incident, the International Socialist Conference declared May 1st as International Workers' Day to call for better working conditions and workers' rights worldwide. In China, the holiday was officially established in 1949 after the Communist Party took power and has since been celebrated every year.
