In the Northern Ocean swims a fish called Kun.

鲲之大，不知其几千里也。

A thousand li may measure well its form.

化而为鸟，其名为鹏。

Transformed, it takes the name of Peng, a bird,

鹏之背，不知其几千里也。

Whose back appears to stretch across the sky.

怒而飞，其翼若垂天之云。

With anger it can soar a myriad li,

是鸟也，海运则将徙于南冥；

Or on the ocean's surface it may rest.

池则将飞入于渤。

But if it tries to perch upon a pond,

是鱼也，鳞呈五色，

Its wings will flounder in the water's depths.

而光彩煜煜。

A fish it was; with scales of many hues,

各自寻食而游，

Its brilliant radiance could light the sky.

游而不盈，

It swam in search of food, but would not fill,

各自忘形而夜啼。

And in the night would lose itself in song.

是鸟也，逐鹿无敢前者，

It was a bird, and none could challenge it

夙夜在阴雪之中。

When it pursued the prey it sought to kill.

是鱼也，各自翱翔，

A fish it was, and as it soared on high,

相与玩于空波。

It played with empty waves, its comrades nigh.
