The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday. It falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar and is a commemoration of the patriotic poet Qu Yuan from the ancient kingdom of Chu. Qu Yuan was a loyal minister, but he was falsely accused and eventually committed suicide by jumping into the river. In order to prevent fish and shrimp from eating his body, people put rice dumplings into the river and rowed dragon boats to search for his remains. Today, the Dragon Boat Festival has become a celebration where people eat rice dumplings, participate in dragon boat races, and hang mugwort and calamus to ward off evil spirits.
