Where Did Hip Hop Come From?



Hip hop is a kind of popular music that started in New York City in the early 1970s. In disco clubs, DJs needed to keep music playing between each song so people could dance. They began to mix parts of the song that was playing with the next song, using a heavy drum beat to tie it together. This became very popular because of the treat rhythm. People looked forward to that part so they could dance even more. Very soon, the DJs began to use a drum machine so they could develop their mix of songs more and even make up some of their own music. To keep the audience excited, an MC would speak between the songs, to introduce the DJ, tell jokes, or tell stories. This practice was the beginning of rap, which is used in today's hip hop music a lot. Hip hop music today usually has one or more rappers talking and sometimes singing above a heavy rhythm.

Camping --- what is it, who does it, and how?



Camping is an outdoor activity that many Americans like to do. It lets them get away from the city and enjoy nature by staying one or more nights outdoors in a tent, an RV, or just a sleeping bag. There are many different kinds of camping. Some camp in a forest or field where they are allowed to stay. Other campers ride bikes or drive cars to their camping place. Other campers like to drive RVs, with connections for electricity and bathrooms.



Many people like to do other activities together with camping, like hiking, fishing, and swimming. The purpose of camping is to enjoy nature without all the conveniences of city life. Many families like to go camping when they are on vacation, because it is not expensive and it is something that the children enjoy.

Volunteering means to work without being paid. Volunteering is a popular activity in the United States. Students are often able to participate in volunteer activities through a church, their school, or an organization such as the Boy Scouts (or Girl Scouts) of America. Volunteers often participate in fund raising activities such as individually selling cookies door-to-door (in the case of Girl Scouts) or washing cars for one or two days as a group. Volunteers in a church group or a school may visit hospitals, senior citizen institutions, or orphanages. Volunteering benefits students in the following ways.



(1) Students learn to contribute to others less fortunate than themselves.



(2) Students become more mature and have a wider vision through experiences interacting with different kinds of people.



(3) Students gain different kinds of skills (i.e., teaching, sales, craftsmanship).



(4) Students gain confidence and feel good about themselves.
