In Britain you're allowed to drive a car when you're seventeen. You have to get a special two-year driving license before you can start. When you're learning, someone with a full license always has to be in the car with you because you aren't allowed to drive the car on the road alone. You don't have to go to a driving school --- a friend can teach you. The person with you isn't allowed to take money for the lesson he's got a teacher's license.
Before you're allowed to have a full license, you have to take a driving test. You can take a test in your own car, but it has to be fit for the road. In the test you have to drive round for about half an hour and then answer a few questions. If you don't pass the test, you're allowed to take it again a few weeks later if you want to. In 1970 a woman passed her fortieth test after 212 driving lessons! When you've passed your test, you don't have to take it again, and you're allowed to go on driving as long as you like. Britain's oldest driver was a man who drove in 1974 at the age of 100.
Before 1904 everyone was allowed to drive, even children. Then from 1904 car drivers had to have a license. But they didn't have to take a test until 1935. On the early days of car driving, before 1878, cars weren't allowed to go faster than four miles an hour, and someone had to lead the car with a red flag.

A personality test is a kind of test which is supposed to reveal the behavior or the character of a person. Many companies use personality tests to determine if a job applicant is a good match for a specific job, such as a sales position. Students are often given personality tests in school to help them to choose a good career path. Adults may take personality tests when they consider changing their careers. Personality tests give the test takers more information about themselves and therefore help them to know themselves better and to make better choices about their lives.

"Life is speeding up. Everyone is getting unwell."

This may sound like something someone would say today. But in fact, an unknown person who lived in Rome in AD 53 wrote it.

We all love new inventions. They are exciting, amazing and can even change our li1ves.

But have all these developments really improved the quality of our lives?

Picture this. You're rushing to finish your homework on the computer. Your mobile phone rings; a QQ message from your friend appears on the screen; the noise from the television is getting louder and louder. Suddenly the computer goes blank and you lose all your work. Now you have to stay up all night to get it done. How happy do you feel?

Inventions have sped up our lives so much that they often leave us feeling stressed and tired. Why do you think people who live far away from noisy cities, who have no telephones, no cars, not even any electricity often seem to be happier? Perhaps it's because they live simpler lives.

One family in the UK went "back in time" to see what life was like without all the inventions we have today. The grandparents, with their daughter, and grandsons Benjamin, 10, and Thomas, 7, spent nine weeks in a 1940s house. They had no washing machine, microwave, computer or mobile phones.

The grandmother, Lyn, said, "The more things you have, the more difficult life becomes." The boys said they fought less. Probably, they said, because there was less to fight over, such as their computer. Benjamin also noticed that his grandmother had changed from being a "Trendy, beer-drinking granny, to one who cooked things."

Unit 5 It must belong to Carla. 文化背景知识介绍
广东省教育厅教研室

Boy Scouts

The Boy Scouts began in 1907 with the ideas of Robert Baden-Powell, a British soldier. Baden-Powell wrote a book for British soldiers about how to live and survive in the wilds of nature. When he found out that many British boys were reading it, he rewrote the book to teach boys about nature skills. He tested his ideas by inviting a group of 22 boys to camp out on an island for several days to learn about nature. This camp was the beginning of the scouts we know today.

Today, there are many different Boy Scout groups around the world, with about 25 million boys. The main purposes of the group are to teach boys to respect and serve God, their country and other people, to be independent from wrong influences, and to be responsible for themselves and their own good character. Their promise and law is "duty to God and country," and their motto is "Be Prepared." They believe that they should do good to others without expecting any reward.
