Hey Tom,I'm glad to hear you're doing great. I had a terrible day today. I didn't sleep well last night, because the neighbors were playing loud music until two in the morning. That's why I woke up late this morning and had to run to Janet's house to walk with her to school. She was late as usual and we had to run to make sure we weren't late for school. She should really get a watch. Doesn't she know it's rude to make people wait all the time?Anyway, after school, I went to buy some shoes. They felt alright when I tried them on, but when I got home and checked, I found out they were the wrong size! Great --- so now I have to go back to the shop and change them. Then in the evening, I went out for dinner and a movie with a couple of friends. I was really annoyed when I saw this man smoking next to him! You know what I can't stand either? When people jump the line! We were waiting to buy the movie tickets at the cinema and this guy just cut in line. I told him to go back to the end of the line but he just stared at me. The movie was OK but as usual, there were people who didn't switch off their cell phones during the show. You have no idea how annoyed I was!Sorry I've been complaining to much, but today was not a good day. I hope tomorrow will be better.Jay

人们经常通过赠送礼品来表达谢意（thanks）和祝贺（congratulations）。给外国友人赠送礼品要尽可能考虑收礼人的喜好（likes and dislikes）。如不了解对方喜好，稳妥的办法是选择具有民族特色的工艺品。中国人熟悉的风筝（kite）、二胡（Erhu）、笛子（flute）、剪纸（paper-cut）、筷子（chopsticks）、图章（seal）、脸谱（facial makeup）、书画（painting and calligraphy）、茶叶（tea）等，一旦到了外国友人的手里，往往会备受青睐。礼不在重而在于合适，有时太贵重的礼品反而会使收礼者不安。向外国友人赠送礼品时，既要说明其寓意（implied meaning）、特点（characteristics）与用途（usage），又要说明它是为对方精心挑选的。与中国人的习俗不同，在西方国家人们接受礼物后会当面拆看，并对礼物表示赞赏。



       另外，赠送礼物要适时。在阿拉伯国家，必须有其他人在场，送礼才不会有贿赂的嫌疑。在英国，合适的送礼时机是请别人用完晚餐或在剧院看完演出之后。在法国，不能向初次结识的朋友送礼，应等到下次相逢的适当时机再相送。
