An Unlucky Day

Yesterday wasn't a very good day for me. I usually get up at six o'clock, but yesterday I didn't get up until seven o'clock. I got dressed quickly and ate breakfast. It was so late that I ran all the way to the bus stop. Unfortunately, on the way I fell down. My books and homework fell into the street. Papers went everywhere. At the bus stop, I waited and waited while lots of full buses went by. I was so upset. At last one came but it was also full, and it went right past. But then it stopped a few yards away and someone got off. I ran widly down the road and got the only spare seat.

At noon, I was very hungry, but I didn't have money to buy lunch. My lunch money was at home on my desk. Then in math class, the teacher asked for our homework. I looked in my notebook, but my homework wasn't there. Maybe I'd lost it when I fell down. The teacher punished me by making me clean the classroom after class.

My goodness, I finished cleaning the classroom at last. When I put my things in my schoolbag and got ready to go home, I found my homework right at the bottom.

What did the boy do after he got up?

First he

Then he

After he ate breakfast, he

On the way to the bus stop, he

At lunch time, he

After lunch, he

In math class, he

CHARLES M.SCHULZ --- A LIFE

Charles M. Schulz was born on November 26, 1922 in Minneapolis, America. His father was a barber, just like Charlie Brown's. The young Charles, or Sparky as he was nicknamed, loved reading comics, especially "Popeye" and those by Walt Disney. His talent as an artist was recognized very early in his life. His kindergarten teacher told him, "Some day, Charles, you're going to be an artist."

In 1934, the Schulz family was given a black and white dog that became Charles's inspiration for "Snoopy". He sent one of his drawings of his dog to a newspaper in 1937 and it became his first published work.

In 1943, at the age of 20, Schulz joined the army and fought in Europe during World War Ⅱ. In 1945, he returned home and started to work his way to becoming a cartoon artist. In 1950, Schulz got the support of a newspaper and soon Charlie Brown, Snoopy and their friends were born. The cartoon was named "Peanuts". Its popularity grew in the States.

Then, gradually, the rest of the world came to know him as well. In 1965, Charlie Brown, his dog Snoopy and the rest of the "Peanuts gang" appeared on the cover of TIME magazine --- a sign of Schulz's achievement.

Schulz never stopped drawing until 1999. He was suffering from ill health and had to retire. The last original "Peanuts" cartoon appeared in newspapers around the world on February 13, 2000. Schulz died in his sleep on February 12, 2000.

Today, the "Peanuts" comics appear in more than 30, 000 newspapers, in 40 languages and 75 countries. Every day, more than 350 million people read about Charlie Brown, his dog Snoopy and their friends, and smile.

Unit 4 He said I was hard-working.

Dear Xiaofan,
How are you? I'm so glad to have a new pen pal in China. I'm 14 years old and I live in New York.
I want to tell you more about my studies here so you can know me better. I finished my end-of-year exams last week and got my report card today. Luckily I did well in most of my school subjects this semester. I had a really hard time with science last semester, but I did much better this time. My science teacher said that I was very hard-working. Another exciting result was in math. My math teacher said I was very smart and careful. Actually I got the highest score in the test. One disappointing result was in French. My French teacher said I could do better.
Well, that's all the news I have for now. Please write soon and tell me about your studies.
Yours,
Mike

I would love to tell you more about my school life here, but my English is not that good. And I'm afraid that I can't express myself clearly.
I think I will continue to work hard on all my school subjects, especially on my English. Could you give me some advice on learning the language?
Yours,
Xiaofan
参考范文:
Dear Mike,
Thank you very much for your letter! I'm the same age as you and I live in Nanjing.
I would love to tell you more about my school life here, but my English is not that good. And I'm so afraid that I can't express myself clearly.
I got an A in Chinese. My teacher thought that my essay writing was very good. I also got As in Math, Science, and History, but I need to continue to improve in those subjects. My history teacher encouraged me to read more stories, and I need to pay attention to the small things in math! I didn't do quite as well in Physics. I got a B, but my teacher said that she has confidence that I can do better. My worst mark was a C in English. Language is very difficult for me, but I know if I keep working hard, I can do much better.
I think I will continue to work hard on all my subjects, especially on my English. Could you give me some advice on learning the language?

Unit 5 If you go to the party, you'll have a great time! 文化背景知识介绍
人民教育出版社

美国人的派对

    美国人喜欢交际,爱组织(organize)和参加(take part in)各种各样的派对(party)。当要举行一个聚会时,先要发出邀请(invitation)。邀请的方式可以当面提出(in person),也可以用电话(by phone)或信件通知(by letter)。
