  What's your hobby?



One of the oldest hobbies around the world is kite flying. People have been flying kites for a long time. Nowadays, many people fly kites as a hobby, but some people fly kites as a competitive sport.



Lots of young people are taking up skateboarding as a hobby these days. Skateboarders practice at skateboarding parks and there are international competitions where skateboarders do high jumps and other amazing stunts. Skateboarders even have their own fashion, usually really big baggy trousers and shirts.



Another popular hobby is flying model airplanes. People stand on the side of a hill or mountain and fly small planes by remote control. The "pilot" can make the planes do stunts, like flying upside down and diving.



Not everyone likes such excitement for a hobby. Some people prefer to stay indoors and play computer games. And others imply like to read.

——漫话“酷”

在美国，人们称唱流行爵士歌曲者（jazz singer）为Cool Cat。我们过去将其译为“凉猫”，现多译为“酷猫”。其中最“酷”的一位是被中国歌迷称之为“猫王”的美国爵士摇滚歌星埃尔维斯·普雷斯利（Elvis Presley）。“猫王”衣着飘逸，歌声动人，舞台形象“酷”劲十足，后代歌星竞相效仿（follow）。遗憾的是，许多年轻人只是一味模仿“猫王”的衣着举止（clothing and behavior），甚至望文生义，以为只有“冷”才会“酷”。于是，他们便纷纷画冷色调妆，黑眼眶、黑嘴唇，同时加一头乱发。其实，真正的“cool”不是在外表（appearance），而是在内心（heart）。



“cool”一词的真正流行要功归于一位已故著名黑人小号手麦尔斯·戴维斯（Miles Davis）的爵士经典之作《酷派的诞生》（The Birth of Cool）。从那以后，“cool”逐渐走出了黑人英语的小圈子，同时渐渐改变了往日“冷漠、深沉”的含义，转而被美国大众赋予了新的内涵（meaning），即赞扬一种创新（creative）的思想和标新立异（unorthodox）的形象。



对于我们而言，用用“cool”是可以的，但不宜过多。多花些时间练习用一些生动（lively）、地道（authentic）的表达方式，说一口流利（fluent）的英语才是最“酷”的。

When describing other people, especially to their faces, we need to be very careful about the words we use. "Fat", for example, is almost always considered a rude way to describe someone even if they are indeed overweight. "Heavy," is a much better word to use, although even then we might need to take care when using it as some people are very sensitive about their size and weight.



In some cultures, it is impolite to point at other people or to touch other people, particularly on the head.

WANTED

We are looking for two bank robbers.
