Unit 11 What do you think of game shows?

Unit 11 What do you think of game shows?

A sitcom – or situation comedy – is a comedy show that is always based around a particular situation. The first sitcoms began in the early to mid 20th century, though the form has remained popular to this day. Very often, a sitcom will reflect the changing social times, and the situation around which the show is based will vary. For example, Father Knows Best, an early American sitcom, showed a very traditional family setting with two parents and children. In more recent years, sitcoms such as My Two Dads reflect the changing status of the family in American society. Because sitcoms changed with the times, they rarely last more than 5 to 10 years.

A soap opera is an ongoing drama serial usually focusing on real-life issues. Some soap operas show the lives of ordinary workers and people. These appeal to the audience because the characters lives are very familiar to them. Others focus instead on wealth people, and these appeal to the audience as fantasy. Some successful soap operas can continue for decades.

My favorite program is Around the World because I love traveling very much. I can visit many wonderful places in the program. One day, I want to go to those places by myself. I also like The Second Horizon. I can get many good ideas from other students of my age in this program. I watch these two programs twice a week.
I can't stand soap operas. I think they are long and boring.
There are too few programs for teenagers. Could you make more good programs for middle school students?

—— Introduction to "TV culture"

On television in the United States, there are all sorts of TV shows. On weekday afternoons, you can watch talk shows and soap operas. In talk shows, experts discuss various topics and answer questions from the audience; soap operas are emotional dramas that continue day after day.

In the evening, many people watch their favorite sitcom or game show to relax. Sitcoms are funny and usually involve a cast of recurring characters. One popular American sitcom is Friends, a show about the lives of six young people living and working in Manhattan. In game shows, contestants compete for prizes in games of knowledge of chance. A popular game show in the United States is Wheel of Fortune. Here, contestants spin a wheel for a chance to solve a word puzzle and win cash prizes.

On weekends, sports fans often stay home to watch sports games and championships such as American football and the Super Bowl.

Unit 12 Don't eat in class.
