Workers in the United States generally receive far fewer vacation days per year than workers in most other western countries. In general, mainland European countries such as Sweden, Denmark and France tend to give their workers the most leave (perhaps around 30 days per year). Countries such as the United Kingdom and Japan average around 20 days, but the United States averages as little as 12 days or fewer. Studies have also shown that American workers work longer hours than workers in Europe or China.

Today, my uncle and I went to Central Park. It was a beautiful sunny day. We walked around and fed the pigeons. In the afternoon we went to the Guggenheim Museum. It was amazing. In the evening we went to a really expensive restaurant, but it was really crowded and the food was awful.

    I just got back from my summer vacation and it was great! I went to Beijing. The weather was perfect, not too hot and I saw so many interesting things. I walked along the Great Wall --- it was amazing! I also visited Tian'anmen Square and went to the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace. The buildings were beautiful. The food was excellent, but it was really spicy sometimes. And the people were not bad. I don't speak Putonghua, so sometimes that was a little difficult. I had a fabulous time. I want to go back to China again next year!

Most people in Western countries have two big holidays every year --- one holiday over the Christmas and New Year period, and another holiday in the summer. People who live in different states usually travel home to spend time with their families during Christmas; they exchange presents and eat big dinners together at home. On the last day of the year, most people have a big party to welcome the New Year.



       Dring the summer, people usually spend their time doing outdoor activities. People go camping or hiking in the mountains. Others take up a sport or go to the beach. In the United States and Canada, students often spend their summer at summer camps, where they meet and play with new friends.



Another popular summer vacation activity is to visit another country. Cities like New York and Pairs are very popular choices. When people visit another country, they normal go sightseeing, visit museums and eat at restaurants.
