Andraka is 15 years old and comes from Maryland. His uncle died of pancreatic cancer. This cancer is often detected too
late to save the patient. Andraka decided to find a better way of detecting the cancer.
He got this idea while in biology class. Then he spent several months studying the cancer
and writing reports. The next step was to find a researcher and a place to work in, so he got to keep in touch with about 200 researchers.
“More than 197 researchers turned me down and only one was willing to help,” he said. The man who said yes was Anirban Maitra, a medical professor (教授) at Johns Hopkins University and a top researcher in pancreatic cancer.
Andraka started working with the professor. Under the guiding of Maitra, Andraka developed a test paper that could detect the cancer by blood testing (验血). It is faster, less expensive and more sensitive (敏感的) than other pancreatic cancer tests. People can also use it for other cancers.
Maitra said the test still needs work, but it has done well so far. Because of his outstanding work, Andraka got the $75,000 prize at the 2012 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.
Andraka is now waiting for a patent (专利) on his test paper and continuing to work on it. “Anyone can be a scientist,” Andraka said. “They just have to find a passion (热情) and work at it.”

We take most of our photos when we travel, but teens from Massachusetts, US, took photos of every corner of their own communities(社区). And they found things they didn’t
know before. It’s part of a program to ask teenagers to care about the safety of their communities. They took photos and found problems.

It’s that time of the year again, when Apple fans go crazy about the release (发行) of the new iPhone. The new model, which will be released in the Chinese mainland (大陆) later this year, is a little bit longer than the iPhone4S.
Although the size changed, the model is actually thinner and lighter
