Last year I worked in Nepal (尼泊尔) for three months. When the hospital let me have a few days off, I decided to go into the jungle. I asked a Nepalese guide, Kamal Rai, to go with me.
We started our trip at six in the morning with two elephants carrying our things. It was hot, but Kamal made me wear shoes and trousers to protect me from snakes. In the jungle there was a lot of wildlife, but we were trying to find tigers. We climbed onto the elephants’ backs to see better. However, it is unusual to find tigers in the afternoon because they sleep in the daytime.
Then, in the distance, we saw a tiger, and Kamal told me to be very quiet. We moved nearer and found a dead deer. This was the tiger’s lunch! Suddenly, I started to feel very frightened.
Then the tiger jumped out suddenly, about five hundred kilos and four metres long. It grabbed Kamal’s leg between its teeth, but I managed to pull Kamal away. One of our elephants ran at the tiger and made it go back into the grass, so we quickly ran away to let the tiger eat its lunch. That night it was impossible to sleep!

On the first day of the new term in 2012, thousands of students in Chongming county (县) in Shanghai took the new school buses to school.
The new school buses are yellow with huge bonnets (引擎盖) in the front. Students call them “big nose” school buses.
The local government spent 6 million yuan buying 17 new school buses for the primary and middle schools in the county to make sure of the safety of more than 1,000 students who live in rural areas, where ordinary buses couldn’t easily arrive.
This new kind of school bus has alarms, on-board cameras and seats specially designed for school children. They are much safer than minivans or older buses that were used in this county before.
“‘Big nose’ looks very beautiful, and it makes me feel safe,” said Liu Mengqing, a fourth-year student of Xinhai School.
Liu said that in the old school buses, there was no air conditioner and every two or three children shared one seat.
“The new buses are sturdy enough so that parents shouldn’t be worried about their children,” said Zhang Zhongli, the father of a student.
