Unit 1 Our birthdays
Task objectives
Understand a series of instructions and act accordingly

The first period
A. Pat is making a birthday calendar. Koko is talking to her. Listen, look and say.
Presentation
1.        Bring in a large wall calendar in English.
2.        Show the pupils the wall calendar. Say This is a calendar. Point to each month. Tell the pupils This is one month. Show the pupils and read aloud the names of the week from Sunday to Saturday.
Teacher: There are seven days in a week. They are Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Tell the pupils to use ‘and’ before the last item in the list.
3.        Ask the pupils How many months are there? Ask them to say after me the names of the months in order.
T: There are twelve months in a year. They are January, February, March …
4.        Show Transparency. Play the Pupil’s Book Cassette and point to the speech bubbles. Ask the pupils to repeat after the cassette.
Practice
1.        Read the conversation between Pat and Koko. Ask the pupils to repeat the conversation after me. Let them finish reciting the names of the months by themselves.
2.        Ask the pupils Which month is it? What’s the date today?
Play a game
1.        Make a quiz for the pupils. Write the names of the months using the letters in the wrong order. Also mix up the order of the months, for example, GASTUU= August. Tell the pupils to unscramble the letters. See who can be first to finish.
2.        Play Bingo using the months of the year.

1.        本课的单词多,难度大,尤其是12个月份的单词的读音和要反复练习, 变化各种方法学习和巩固。

The second period
Revision
How many days are there in a week? What are they?
How many months are there in a year? What are they?
B1. Tim and his mother are talking. It’s Grandmother’s birthday soon. Listen, say and act.

Presentation
Ask individual pupils When’s your birthday? Get them to answer My birthday is in (month).
Practice
1.        Show Transparency. Play the Pupil’s Book Cassette. Explain that Tim is going to use his saved money to buy Grandma a present.
2.        Read the conversation and ask the class to read it after me. Practise the falling intonation for the question When’s Grandma’s birthday?
3.        Demonstrate the conversation in picture 2. Get the pupils to repeat the conversation after me.
4.        Ask two pupils to role-play Tim and his mother in picture 2.
5.        Tell the pupils to work in pairs. Ask them to look at picture 3, 4 and 5 and role-play Tim and his mother.
6.        Ask When’s …’s birthday? about the people in the thought bubbles in pictures 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Pair work
Get the pupils to work in pairs to ask each other When’s your birthday?
B2. Koko is making a list of her friends’ birthdays. Listen, say and act.
Presentation
1.        Write the numbers 1 to 20 on the board in a row. Tell the pupils that when we say the date we add th to most numbers. Add th to numbers 4 to 20.
2.        Point to number 1. Ask the pupils if they know what we add to 1 when we say dates. Write st and say we have a special way of saying number one when it’s a date. We say first. Write the word first on the board. Ask the pupils to say the word after me.
3.        Repeat the procedure to teach second and third. Continue by showing the pupils how the spelling changes for fifth, ninth, twelfth and twentieth. Write 21, 22 and 23 underneath 1, 2 and 3. Ask the pupils to guess how we write twenty-first, twenty-second and twenty-third. Ask the pupils to guess how to spell thirtieth and how to change 31 into a date. Tell the pupils to count with me from first to thirty-first.
4.        Ask a pupil to stand up and tell the class My birthday is in (month). Invite the other pupils to guess when his/her birthday is. Model the way to ask by guessing myself, e.g. Is your birthday on June twenty-third? Check that the pupils are saying on rather than in and that the th at the end of the ordinal number is clear.
Practice
1.        Show Transparency. Explain that Koko is asking her friends about their birthdays. Read Koko and Ken’s conversation and ask the pupils to repeat it after me.
2.        Ask the pupils to work in pairs to role-play Koko and Ken.
课后记
1.        介词in和on的用法和区别。很多学生混淆。
2.        强调表达日期要用序数词。学生的熟练程度要加强。

The third period
Revision
What’s the date today?
When’s your birthday?
When’s your mother’s birthday?
B3. Listen and circle the correct dates.
Show the pupils there are three dates next to the picture of each child. Play the Pupil’s Book Cassette. Tell the pupils to listen and circle the correct dates.
C. A story: Great-grandpa’s birthday.
1.        Point to the characters in the pictures and read their speech bubbles aloud. Ask the pupils to point to the speech bubbles as I read them. Ask the pupils a prediction question at the end of picture 3, What day is today? (It’s Great-grandpa’s birthday.)
2.        Play the tape for the pupils and ask them to listen. Play the cassette again and ask them to say the sentences after the cassette.
3.        Ask the pupils to role-play the story in groups of four and to read the characters’ speech bubbles.
D. Read the story again. Write the answers.
Ask the pupils to read the story again. Show them where to write their answers. Check the answers with the pupils.

E. Say the sound and the words.
1.        Play the Pupil’s Book Cassette and ask the pupils to listen to the sound and the words.
2.        Say the words slowly and clearly. Check that the pupils are saying the sound correctly.
3.        Point to the pictures and check that the pupils can say the words.
4.        Play the cassette again. Ask the pupils to listen to the poem and then circle the same letters with the same sound. Get the pupils to repeat the poem.
F. Make a birthday train.
1.        Ask the pupils to find friends with a birthday in the same month with them and get into groups.
2.        Within their groups, the pupils find out the birthdays of their group members in order to get into order of dates.
3.        Ask each pupil to cut out the train car on page 77 and write the date of their birthday on the carriage.
4.        Tell the pupils to line up in order of their birthdays and to present their train by saying who is the first, the second, the third and so on.
G. Sing the song.
Play the cassette for the pupils to listen to the song and then encourage them to join in with the words.
H. Think about it!
Ask the pupils how many birthdays Xiaoming has had (three). Ask them to divide his age (twelve) by the number of birthdays (three). Which date only happens once every four years? (February 29th).

Do Workbook exercises
Workbook (p.1)
Tell the pupils to look at the months in the box and write the correct months in the word puzzle. Then ask the pupils to complete the sentence by writing the correct month of Sam’s birthday.

Ask the pupils to look at the pictures and listen to the Workbook Cassette. Then ask them to write the correct months according to what they hear on the tape.
Workbook (p.3)
Ask the pupils to look at the pictures and listen to the cassette. Then ask them to circle the correct dates for the people’s birthdays according to what they hear on the tape.
Workbook (p.4)
Play the tape. The pupils need to circle the words with the same sound and the same letters according to what they hear on the tape.

The first period
A. Tim and Koko are looking at photos. Listen, look and say.
Presentation
1.        Show the pupils a greeting card for a holiday and ask them What is this? Then ask them When do we send greeting cards? Write the names of the holidays, National Day, Children’s Day, Teacher’s Day and Christmas Day on the board.
2.        Take one example of a holiday, e.g. Children’s day. Ask the pupils What do we do on Children’s Day? Suggest and mime making a card, singing a song, writing a poem or drawing a picture.
3.        Show Transparency. Play the Pupil’s Book Cassette and point to the speech bubbles. Ask the pupils to repeat after the cassette.
Practice
1.        Show Transparency. Point to the photo album Tim is holding and ask the pupils to tell me the names of the holidays shown in each picture. Read the conversation between Tim and Koko. Ask the pupils to repeat the conversation after me.
2.        Point to each of the pictures in turn. Ask half the class to act Koko and the other half to act Tim. Tell them to ask and answer What’s Pat doing here? She’s …

What can you do on … Day?
B1. Pat is reading Jenny’s poem. Listen, say and act.
Presentation
1.        Find out the dates for this year’s holidays. Write the dates and the names of the holidays on the board.
2.        Point to the holidays on the board and ask the pupils When’s … Day? Get the pupils to come out and write the correct dates.
Practice
1.        Show Transparency. Play the tape.
2.        Read the conversation and ask the class to read it after me. Practise the falling intonation for the question When’s …?
3.        Demonstrate for the question and ask the pupils how to ask and answer the question about when Children’s Day is. Ask the pupils in pairs to role-play Pat and Jenny.
4.        Ask the questions to find out if the pupils can answer When’s … Day?
5.        Ask about other holidays, e.g. National Day, May Day, New Year’s Day, etc.
B2. Kim and Mark are at a gift shop. Listen, say and act.
Presentation
1.        Bring in a photo of Tian’anmen Square.
2.        Go to the door. Get ready to close it. Ask the pupils What am I going to do? Tell them I am going to close the door. Then close the door. Try other actions. Each time tell the pupils about my intention to do something using going to, and then do it.
3.        Write the date of National Day on the board. Show the pupils the photo of Tian’anmen Square and write its name in English on the board. Explain that many people visit Tian’anmen Square on National Day. Ask the pupils What are you going to do on National Day?
4.        Point to other holidays from B1 and ask about the pupils’ intentions, e.g. What are you going to do on …? Prompt them to answer by saying I’m going to make a card/draw a picture/sing a song/write a poem.
Practice
1.        Show Transparency. Play the tape. Read the rubric and make sure the pupils understand what a gift shop is. Read Kim and Mark’s conversation and ask the pupils to repeat it after me.
2.        Point to the next picture. Ask the pupils to look in the thought bubbles and role-play the conversation in pairs.

The third period

B3. Listen and circle the correct picture.
Tell the pupils that they are going to listen to the children talking about another holiday. They should circle the correct date and the picture of the thing that the girl is going to do on that holiday. Play the tape and check that the pupils have circled the correct answer.
C. Pat is reading an e-mail from Jenny. Listen and read.
1.        Check that the pupils know what e-mail is. Show them that Jenny has sent the e-mail to Pat.
2.        Play the cassette for the pupils and ask them to say the sentences after the cassette.
3.        Ask the pupils What does Jenny’s mother like?
4.        Ask the pupils When’s Mother’s Day this year? What are you going to do on Mother’s Day?
D. Read the e-mail again. Write the answers.
Ask the pupils to read the e-mail again. Show them where to write their answers. Check the answers with the pupils.

学生回答D部分的问题时运用的句型不够熟。尤其是特殊疑问句的疑问词。

F. Make a plan.
1.        The pupils work in pairs. They should choose one of the holidays in this unit and find out when it is this year.
2.        Tell the pupils to choose an activity for the special day and to write a sentence about their planned activity starting We’re going to …
3.        Tell the pupils to join in with another pair so that four pupils are working together. Each pair takes turns to ask and answer questions about the special days they have chosen. They choose the best plan from the two pairs for the next step.
4.        One representative from each group of four tells the rest of the class what their chosen day is, when it is and what they plan to do. The class votes for the best plan.
5.        Ask the pupils to make a card for their special day.
G. Listen, write and chant.
Play the tape for the pupils to listen to the chant and encourage them to join in with the words. Then ask the pupils to complete the second verse by writing the correct words in the blanks.
H. Think about it!
Make sure there is a calendar in the classroom for the pupils to check these dates.

Tell the pupils to look at the words and the pictures. Then ask the pupils to complete the sentences by writing the correct words in the blanks.

Presentation
1.        Tell the pupils It’s Sports Day soon. Ask them What can you do at Sports Day? Demonstrate some of the activities and ask the pupils to recall vocabulary they know for the actions, e.g. run, jump, etc.
2.        Demonstrate new items of vocabulary and write the names of the activities on the board. Ask the pupils to stand up and do the actions when I point to one of the words/phrases on the board.     do the high jump    throw a ball    run in a race      catch a ball
3.        Point to activities on the board and ask the pupils What can you do? Encourage them to reply I can …
4.        Show Transparency. Play the tape and point to the speech bubbles. Ask the pupils to repeat after the cassette.
Practice
1.        Read the speech bubbles of the people on the page and ask the pupils to repeat them after me.
2.        Point to the other children on the page and ask the pupils what they can do as shown in the thought bubbles.
3.        Tell the pupils to work in pairs and role-play the PE teacher and the children. They exchange roles after each child’s answer. Monitor to check that the pupils are making correct sentences.
4.        Check the answers with the whole class.
Play a guessing game
Ask individual pupils to choose and mime one of the activities. The other pupils have to guess the activity.

3.        Divide the class into two large groups and ask them to role-play the principal and Miss Li, asking and answering questions about the other children in the picture.
B2. The students are making a programme for the Sports Day. Listen, say and act.
Presentation
1.        Before class, ask a few pupils to tell me what they are going to do at Sports Day. Make notes and bring them to class.
2.        Write the names of the pupils I talked to on the board. Next to the names write the activities they have said they’re going to do. Ask them questions using the wrong activity, e.g. Are you going to …? When the pupils answer No, I’m not, ask them What are you going to do? Encourage them to answer I’m going to …
3.        Using the list, ask the class a mixture of correct and incorrect questions about what the pupils are going to do, e.g. Is he/she going to …? When the pupils answer No, ask them What is he/she going to do?
Practice
1.        Show Transparency. Point to the programme of what the children are going to do on Sports Day. Ask the pupils to tell me the names of the activities pictured on the programme.
2.        Play the tape and ask the pupils to repeat the sentences after the tape.
3.        Ask the pupils to listen to the conversation once more.
4.        Make sure that the pupils know which names are female and which names are male on the list. Tell the pupils to work in pairs and to ask and answer questions about the other children.

be going to的一般疑问句学生掌握和运用得不够熟练。

The third period

1.        Tell the pupils that they are going to hear a conversation about what the children are going to do on Sports Day. Read the names of the pictured children out loud.
2.        Play the tape and tell the pupils to write the names in the correct places.
C. A story: Koko at Sports Day.
1.        Point to the characters in the pictures and read their speech bubbles aloud.
2.        Play the tape for the pupils and ask them to say the sentences after the cassette.
3.        Ask the pupils to look at picture 4. Ask them what does Koko catch? Explain an event is an activity such as a race or the long jump.
D. Read the story again. Write the answers.
Ask the pupils to read the story again. Show them where to write their answers. Then check the answers with the pupils.
课后记
C部分学生读得都不错,不过回答D部分第三小题时,be good at后面应接动词的ing形式,全班做对的同学不多。

2.        Tell the pupils to work in pairs. Explain that they should ask each other what events they are going to do according to what they have written down in their own programme. They add their friend’s name to their list.
3.        Tell the pupils to change partners and talk to a different pupil. They ask and answer questions about what they and their first partner are going to do and write the names in their programme.
4.        The pupils display their programmes in the classroom and find out what their friends are going to do on Sports Day.
G. Listen, write and chant.
1.        Read the words in the first verse aloud with the pupils. Then ask the pupils to guess what John, Bob and Peter are going to do in the second and third verses.
2.        Play the tape for the pupils to listen to the chant. Play the cassette again for the pupils to fill in the missing words.
H. Think about it!
Ask the pupils how they could find out the answers to this section. If possible, ask them to check in a library book or to check their answers on the Internet.

The fifth period
Do Workbook exercises

Tell the pupils to look at the pictures and read the words in the box. Then ask them to complete the sentences by writing the correct events in the blanks.

1.        Ask the pupils to look at the top of the page and listen to the Workbook Cassette. They need to circle the words with the same sound and the same letters according to what they hear on the tape.
2.        Ask the pupils to look at the bottom of the page. Tell them to look at the pictures and fill in the blanks.

Ask the pupils to look at the pictures and read the sentences. Then tell them to complete the sentences by writing the correct events in the blanks.
