You probably know that some English words came from French. One interesting thing is that when we talk about meat on our table we use English words. For example a pig is called “pig” when it is living, but when it is killed and its meat is brought to the table, it is called “pork”. Cattle are called “cattle” when they are raised in the field, but at the dinner table, we call the meat “beef”.
When the Normans ruled England, the English peasants were ordered to raise animals for food, but they themselves could not buy the meat. The meat was sent to the Norman tables. The peasants could only eat rabbits, because rabbits ran all over their fields and rabbit meat is cheap. So the meat of rabbit was not changed into a French word. It was called “rabbit” by English peasants of that time and is still called “rabbit” today.
( )1. According to this text, we know that the words “______” came from French.
A. rabbit and pork B. Norman and beef
C. park and beer D. beef and pork
( )2. Why could the English peasants only eat rabbits at that time?
A. Because they loved rabbits.
B. Because the meat of rabbits was so delicious.
C. Because the rabbits ran into their houses.
D. Because there were a lot of rabbits in the field and the meat was not expensive.
( )3. According to the story, which of the following is TRUE?
A. They called a pig “pork” when it is living.
B. The English could eat all kinds of meat at that time.
C. The word “cattle” came from French.

My son is only five years old this year. I often read some books about preschool education.
One day, I visited Mr. Smith, one of my father’s good friends. He is famous for the study of preschool education. We were talking about children. I asked, “How strict should parents be with their children.”
Mr. Smith looked at me with a smile. And then he pointed a big tall tree in his garden. (There was a string between the big tall tree and a small young tree.) “Please untie that string,” said Mr. Smith. “But before that pull the string tight so that the young tree is straight again.”
I did so. Mr. Smith said, “It is the same with children. You must be strict with them. But sometimes you must untie the string to see how they are getting on. If they are not yet able to stand along you must tie the string tight again. But when you find that they are ready to stand along you can take the string away.”

A how to plant the young trees
B how strict the gardener should be with the two trees

When you want to go shopping, decide how much money you can spend for new clothes. Think about the kind of clothes you really need. Then look for those clothes on sale.
There are labels(标签)inside all new clothes. The labels tell you how to take care of your clothes. The label for a shirt may tell you to wash it in warm water. A sweater label may tell you to wash by washing in cold water. The label on a coat may say “dry clean only”. Washing may ruin(损坏) this coat. If you do as the directions(说明) say on the label, you can keep your clothes looking their best.
Many clothes today must be dry cleaned. Dry cleaning is expensive. When buying new clothes, check(核实) to see if they will need to be dry cleaned. You will save money if you buy clothes that can be washed.
You can save money if you buy clothes that are well made. Well-made clothes last longer. They look good even after they have been washed many times. Clothes that cost more money are not always better made. They do not always fit better. Sometimes less expensive clothes look and fit better than more expensive clothes.
( ) 1.When you want to buy new clothes, the most important thing you should do is take care of the labels.
( ) 2.The label on a coat may say “dry clean only”. “dry clean only” in Chinese means “只能干洗”.
