When we don’t understand each other’s language, we talk with the help of signs.
A Frenchman was once traveling in England. He could not speak English at all. One day he went into a restaurant and sat down at a table. When the waiter came, he opened his mouth, put his finger into it and took it out again. The waiter soon brought him a cup of tea. The man shook his head. The waiter took away the tea and then he brought him a cup of coffee. The man again shook his head. Then the waiter brought him a lot of drinks, but the man still shook his head. Of course, drinks are not food.
When the man was leaving, another man came in. This man saw the waiter, and he put his hands on his stomach. That was enough. In a few minutes, there was a large plate of meat and vegetables on the table in front of him. How clever he was!

Americans are very direct people. When they want something, they say “Yes”. When they don’t want, they say “No”. If they want something different from what is given, they will ask for it. Here’s an example.
I arrive at someone’s house and he or she gives me wine, but I don’t want wine. Maybe I don’t like it or maybe I just don’t want it. I will say “No, thanks”. If everyone around me is drinking something, I would ask for something else and say, “No, thanks. But I’ll take a cup of tea.” If I really want wine, I just say “Yes, please”.
Unless they happen to know the Chinese customs (风俗;习惯), westerners will not ask you again and again after you have said you don’t want it.
